Why smoke free air policy?

It’s About Health

The U.S. Surgeon General stated in 2014,”We now know that smoking causes a host of cancers and other illnesses and is still the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, killing 480,000 people each year.”

The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that completely eliminating secondhand smoke in indoor spaces is the only way to protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke.

Studies across the country and around the world have shown smoke-free policies drive down heart attack rates by as much as 40%.

Youth and Tobacco Use

Smoking and smokeless tobacco use are initiated and established primarily during adolescence. Nearly 9 out of 10 smokers started smoking by age 18, and 99% started by age 26.

Each day in the United States, more than 3,200 people younger than 18 years of age smoke their first cigarette, and an estimated 2,100 youth and young adults who have been occasional smokers become daily cigarette smokers.

If smoking persists at the current rate among youth in this country, 5.6 million of today’s Americans younger than 18 years of age are projected to die prematurely from a smoking-related illness. This represents about one in every 13 Americans aged 17 years or younger alive today.
